From the beginning, A Small Cinema has used it’s format to promote other people out there, and to function as a notice-board for the local and wider cultural community. One of the ways we do this is to show pre-screening slides for local businesses and cultural endeavours.

Chinatown Archives & 1am Screenings in 1976

Today I was joined by Orla Foster and we rummaged about in Liverpool’s archives to find a bit more background research for our current Chinatown project. Well I say rummaged, I guess carefully glanced at books- laid-on-sponge-beds would be more appropriate. We found heaps of interesting material that Orla is currently sifting through and we’ll post some interesting articles shortly, but in the meantime here is a great story of how the Chinese community came together to watch films in 1976 in fascinating circumstances.

How to thread a 16mm projector

John O’Shea gave us a lesson on working with film, showing us how to thread a 16mm projector. We had a little help from an old demonstration video on youtube (see at the bottom of this post), and then had a crack ourselves.

We decided to make our own ‘How to’ video. Sam and Peter try and thread a 16mm projector for the first time (with a bit of help from John). The film we projected is an original film from the Chinese Ministry of Culture called ‘Women in China’.
